Xunlight Corporation (Toledo, Ohio - USA)

The market for thin-film solar modules has attracted much investment over the past two years, and Xunlight Corporation of Toledo, Ohio, is no exception. Emerald Technology Ventures led the company's first round of financing back in May 2007, helping fund construction of a pilot production line for Xunlight's flexible thin-film silicon solar modules. Emerald also participated in a $22 million (U.S.) Series-B round that was closed in April. This most recent round was led by Trident Capital, a leading Silicon Valley-based private equity and venture capital firm that manages over $1.6 billion (U.S.). The new capital will be used to build Xunlight's first commercial manufacturing line.

In addition to the Series-B funding, Xunlight has bolstered its team with some new appointments. Dr. Masat Izu, Matthew Longthorne and David Buzby have joined the company. Dr. Izu is a 30-year veteran of the solar photovoltaics industry. He was previously a vice-president at Energy Conversion Devices Inc., where he led a team that developed highly automated roll-to-roll PV manufacturing lines. Longthorne is former president of Owens-Illinois (OI), a Fortune 500 company based in Toledo. Before joining Xunlight he led OI's largest business unit with $2.3 billion (U.S.) in turnover and a staff of over 6,000 people. Joining Xunlight's Board of Directors is David Buzby, a San Francisco-based private equity investor and current chairman of solar services leader SunEdison LLC.

Xunlight also announced in April the formation of Xunlight 26 Solar LLC (X26). This subsidiary was co-founded with Dr. Alvin Compaan, a professor of physics at the University of Toledo who brings more than 20 years of experience in cadmium telluride (CdTe) solar-cell research. X26 will both benefit from Xunlight's financial support and its roll-to-roll manufacturing expertise. The subsidiary also announced it has received a $1-million (U.S.) grant under Ohio's Alternative Energy Program. Markus Moor continues to sit on Xunlight's Board of Directors.
